about james morrison
My career as a psychiatrist has been somewhat checkered. That is, I've worked in a variety of venues during my professional life. I’ve taught at the medical schools of five universities; for a dozen years I pursued a private practice. I’ve been consultant to crisis residence facilities (in San Diego) and I've headed a publicly funded mental health clinic. For many years I worked for the VA (in San Diego and Martinez, CA, and in Coatesville, PA, where for four years I was chief of staff of the VA medical center). Then I retired, nominally, and moved to Portland, where I’m currently Affiliate Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University. (The “affiliate” bit means this: I agree to teach students and residents, and OHSU agrees not to pay me anything.)
I graduated from Reed College in Portland and obtained my degree in medicine from Washington University in St. Louis. My post-graduate training was interrupted by service in the United States Army (including combat in Viet Nam). I ultimately returned to Washington University to complete my residency in psychiatry.
I've written a number of books, which I hope you'll read about on the Books page.
